Challenge

An international manufacturer needed to provide employees around the world with training on U.S. trade regulations regarding import and export purchasing. Keeping a diverse, dynamic employee base informed of these rules was a client priority.

However, instructors with the necessary legal expertise had limited time to travel or maintain a training schedule. An acceptable solution had to ensure that the learners understood the material and met internal certification requirements.

Stratagem's Solution

Stratagem delivered three complete, Web-based training courses, available to the users in five different languages. Stratagem managed the entire project—with the client’s close cooperation and support—from planning and design through development, implementation, and a maintenance process. A critical component was the creation of a system through which the client could make changes to the on-line course content easily and instantaneously.

Stratagem’s instructional designers met with the client at a design requirements meeting to discuss the required learning outcomes, gather course materials, and plot curriculum flows. They crafted storyboards to map out the progression of learning sessions. The instructional designers then worked with the client’s subject-matter experts to produce the on-line curriculum. A graphics designer created an attractive, comprehensible user interface, ensuring a clean, appropriate ‘look and feel.’

A Stratagem Web architect created a blueprint for the site. Developers built the templates that accommodated the course content. Practice exercises were added into the courseware, so users could test their understanding and retention of the material. Pop-up boxes provided additional context-sensitive information. Stratagem’s courseware deliverables interfaced with a tracking system used by the client to schedule and track employee training needs, as well as record the students’ progress.

Result

The client now has three, one-half-hour, Web-based courses available to its employees on a 24/7 basis. Each course consists of 60–80 screens and can be taken in five different languages. The client can make content changes whenever necessary and is able to assess whether its students have mastered the material.

Students can select exercises in the courses to monitor their understanding of the material. They can take randomly generated quizzes, which are unique to their own learning experience. The courseware also provides the student with immediate feedback in the form of test results.
